What is Fibromyalgia? and its Do's and Don'ts

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterised by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and tenderness in localised areas of the body. The exact cause is unknown, but it may involve abnormal pain processing in the brain and nervous system. Other symptoms include cognitive difficulties ("fibro fog"), headaches, and mood issues like anxiety or depression.

Do's:

  1. Low-Impact Aerobic Exercise: Activities like walking, cycling, and swimming can help improve cardiovascular health without stressing the body. Start slowly and gradually increase intensity.
  1. Strength Training: Gentle resistance training with light weights or resistance bands can help improve muscle strength and reduce pain. Focus on proper form and avoid overexertion.
  1. Stretching: Gentle stretching, such as yoga or tai chi, can improve flexibility, reduce stiffness, and promote relaxation. Focus on mindfulness to avoid overstraining.
  1. Pacing: Practice pacing yourself during exercise—take breaks, listen to your body, and don’t push too hard.

Don’ts:

  1. Avoid High-Impact or Intense Exercise: Running, heavy lifting, or high-intensity workouts can exacerbate pain and fatigue.
  1. Don’t Overexert Yourself: Pushing through fatigue or pain can lead to flare-ups. It's important to rest when needed.
  1. Avoid Sudden Movements: Rapid or jerky movements can strain muscles and worsen symptoms.
