What is Asthma? And the Do’s and Don’ts with Exercise

If you have asthma, you know that exercise can sometimes trigger your symptoms. However, this doesn't mean you should avoid the gym altogether! In fact, exercise is an important part of managing asthma and can help improve lung function over time. When it comes to exercise, it's important to start slow and gradually increase intensity. 

 

  1. Walking: Walking is a low-impact exercise that can be done indoors or outdoors. Start with a short walk and gradually increase the distance or time spent walking.
  2. Cycling: Cycling is another low-impact exercise that can be done indoors or outdoors. Use a stationary bike if outdoor pollen or air pollution triggers your asthma.
  3. Swimming: Swimming is a great exercise for people with asthma because the warm, humid air can be soothing for the lungs. However, avoid swimming in chlorinated pools if the chemicals trigger your asthma.
  4. Strength training: Strength training can help improve overall fitness and lung function. Stick to low-weight, high-repetition exercises to avoid overexertion.

On the other hand, here are some exercises that may trigger asthma symptoms and should be avoided:

  1. High-intensity interval training (HIIT): HIIT involves short bursts of intense activity followed by periods of rest. This type of exercise can be too taxing on the lungs for people with asthma.
  2. Cold weather sports: Cold, dry air can be a trigger for asthma symptoms. Avoid sports such as skiing, ice skating, or hockey if cold air is a trigger for you.
  3. Contact sports: Contact sports such as basketball or soccer can also be too physically demanding for people with asthma.


Remember to always speak with your doctor before starting any new exercise routine. They can help you develop a plan that is safe and effective for your unique needs.
