What is Stroke? and its Do's and Don'ts

Stroke

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted, either due to a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or a ruptured blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). This disrupts brain function, potentially leading to physical disabilities, speech difficulties, and cognitive impairments, depending on the area of the brain affected.

Do's:

  1. Start with Gentle Range-of-Motion Exercises: These help maintain joint flexibility and reduce stiffness, especially in affected limbs. Start with passive movements and gradually progress to active ones as tolerated.
  1. Strengthening Exercises: Light resistance exercises can help rebuild strength and muscle tone in weakened limbs. Focus on small, gradual movements and be mindful of fatigue.
  1. Balance and Coordination Exercises: Activities like standing on one foot, sitting-to-standing transitions, or using a balance board can improve stability.
  1. Walking: If mobility permits, walking (with assistance if necessary) can aid in regaining strength and improving circulation.

Don’ts:

  1. Avoid Overexertion: Do not push too hard; overstressing the body can lead to setbacks.
  1. Avoid High-Risk Activities: Until full recovery, avoid exercises that could lead to falls or injury (e.g., running or jumping).
  1. Don’t Skip Therapy: Physical, occupational, or speech therapy is critical for recovery. Avoid skipping these appointments as they help rebuild function.

Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any exercise program after a stroke to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your recovery stage.
