What is Depression? And the Do’s and Don’ts with Exercise

Exercising can be a great way to manage depression, but it's important to choose the right exercises to avoid making things worse. Here are some exercises to do and avoid:

Do's

Do: Cardiovascular exercises - such as running, cycling or swimming - can help to boost endorphins and improve mood. Yoga can also be beneficial, as it combines both movement and mindfulness.

Do: Strength training can also be helpful, as it can help to increase self-esteem and confidence. Examples of strength training include weight lifting, bodyweight exercises, and resistance band workouts.

Don'ts

Don't: High-intensity workouts can sometimes exacerbate depression, so it's important to listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard. Also, avoid exercises that require a lot of coordination or mental focus, as these can be overwhelming and stressful. Examples of exercises to avoid include kickboxing, martial arts, and complex dance routines.

Ultimately, it's important to find exercises that you enjoy and that make you feel good. Experiment with different types of workouts until you find something that fits your needs and abilities. Remember to check in with yourself regularly and be kind to yourself throughout the process.
